In an interview with the Herald Sun, a member of the Vanguard community, Tony D’Ambrosio, explained that they are “a bunch of white guys that have been in the army for a long time and they think of themselves as warriors”.
Mr D’Amrosio told the Herald-Sun that Vanguard was “a white guys club” and it was “just a group of white people that like to talk about it”.
“There’s a lot of things that are going on that we are trying to talk to our black and brown friends about,” he said.
Vanguard has been around for some time.
It was founded by a group called The Vanguard Group, which is now known as the Vanguard Foundation.
In the 1990s, a group known as The Vanguard Alliance (VVA) was formed to “educate and train a group that would be a core part of the movement to develop an inclusive, multicultural and progressive society”.
VVA is now a registered charity and has a $25 million endowment.
“The VVA has a lot more than a hundred members, but it has a much larger membership and it has been growing every year,” Mr D’Anastosio told The Herald Sun.
He said Vanguard’s goal was to be a “foster of diversity”.
He also claimed that Vanguard had a strong relationship with the “black community”.
“The Vanguard has had a longstanding and long history of building relationships with black communities in Melbourne and NSW,” Mr O’Brien said.
“This is a very important relationship that Vanguard has with the black community.”
